Tennessee Stand-Outs litter the 2011 Draft, 3 from Johnson City

By Josh Harwood

ModelCitySports.com

6/8/2011

Well we didn’t have a first rounder in our midst after all. Though a 2nd rounder usually is a first rounder asking for too much money, or one with a flaw that will take a lot of time to fix (the terrible angle on a shoulder turn during your mid point of the wind-up). Either way, Daniel Norris was taken 74th by the Toronto Blue Jays, an organization known for stock-piling prospects and trying to get every ounce they can, then they trade them (i.e Roy Halladay, A.J Burnett, Vernon Wells,  Shawn Green and so on).

Once Norris’ name was called it seemed to open up the minds of the MLB scouting services to the talent sitting around in each part of Tennessee. Over-all 19 players FROM the state would go in the next 28 rounds. Boston would strike first going with Markus Batts, R/R Shortstop, from John Overton H.S in round 5. Mark Lamm and Nicky Delmonico, yes that Delmonico from Farragut, would go in the next round to Atlanta and Baltimore respectively.

It seemed that the draft would move back east as it got later and later, with Davidson College standout Andrew Bass, RHP, taken by Tampa Bay in the 18th round. Then as the clock hit round 19 an ETSU player would have his name called, Paul Hoilman, a 1st baseman from Science Hill. Hoilman turned out to be one of the better first baseman to ever come through our area as the Cubs took him only after taking another RH Pitcher in Matthew Ramsey from Tennessee. Ramsey took the mound for the Vols the past 3 years and went to the Rays during the 19th round as well.

The draft would close as Matthew James Rice, from Western Kentucky, and a product of Science Hill. Rice would go to Tampa Bay, a organization on the upswing, and the one that took more Tennessee players than anyone else, so far, in 5. The 31-60 rounds continue today at noon.

Science Hill's Norris falls out of First Round, Cole goes First

Picture Taken and Edited by Josh Harwood for ModelCitySports.com

By Josh Harwoood

ModelCitySports.com

June 6th, 2011

The biggest surprise of the first round came as pick by pick went by without our own local talent, Daniel Norris, name called for apparent reasons that were at first unknown. It was thought that since a Rockies scout was at most of Science Hill's games he would fall no lower than number 20 where the Colorado organization stood. However, as it came more and more apparent that Norris is interested in honoring his commitment to Clemson he faded for at least one day.

Colorado did go with a lefty in Taylor Anderson, a hard throwing pitcher from Oregon. The pundits were saying that Norris was starting to price his way out of the argument to be a first round pick, according to Nathan Uly. That statement is backed up even further by the undrafted status of ultra talented Josh Bell.

Bell, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound outfielder, sent a letter to Major League Baseball basically with the intent of informing teams that it doesn't matter how much cash they throw at him, he will not be heading to play in the minors. Instead, he plans to pursue an education and enjoy college life at the University of Texas. The 2nd and 3rd days always see teams take more chances as the price goes down, but I think the door may be shut on Norris in uniform unless the team has a big wallet.

Norris has said all along the way that it was '50-50' chance he would go pro, no matter where he gets drafted. College has a bigger pull in baseball as its harder to hurt ones status when you are on the level of a Norris. Clemson must be licking their chops as they seem more likely than ever to have the talented Norris heading their way.

Another Year, Another ‘Sort of’ Championship

Both teams take the field....during the 2011 National Championship

By:Josh Harwood

ModelCitySports.com

1/11/2011

As we all watch another year go by the way side and another BCS champ crowned I can’t help but wonder in 20 years will anybody even care about the 2010 Auburn Tigers? Will anyone care about the SEC dominance that is currently running over the BCS system that a bunch of rich old white guys have created? I ask this question, with one thing in mind – when a playoff system comes into play, everything beforehand is thought of as less than what takes place after a playoff system is put into play.

But you probably think, Josh, there is no playoff system in sight, why even talk about this? There will be a playoff; the cry for it gets stronger with each agreement. Like the former Bowl system before the 6 super conferences that takes place now, we are inching closer to an ‘and-1 playoff system’ which will lead to an 8 team playoff system then a 16 team and so on. The generation that controls the current ‘power 6’ will die off an the money that a playoff system will draw will get too big and bingo a playoff will begin.

The reason I bring this up because with the NCAA controlling so much of athletics in sports in college and the control they have over football is almost a joke. There has never been a true NCAA football champion! Sears or the coaches pull together and crown someone faux champion, such as Auburn, champion and we take that as being the best college team for that year. The efforts that Cam Newton, Tim Tebow, and Mark Ingram have made over the years becoming champions will be for not one day.

If your saying to yourself, ‘No these will count just as much as they will in 20 years, the Vols will always have 98’. Take a look at it on a local level, people barely count the 13 championships that Dobyns Bennett was given during the pre-1969 era. When people talk about champions they talk about the dynasties of Maryville and Alcoa, but you never hear about the 1950s dynasty of the Indians – and I’m not saying you should put them up with them.

There were so many articles claiming that Greeneville was the first true champion in the playoff era for Northeast Tennessee, right after the playoffs. When we look back at those teams pre 1969, we look more at individual accomplishments – i.e. Bobby Dodd and the running attack that the Indians held. When we look back at the champions during our present day College era we will look at Tim Tebow’s 20 passing Tds and 20 rushing Tds, but the championships will lose luster.

I hate to say this but the actions of a few men that have found a way to hold the college football world hostage. They have limited the grouping of football teams down to just 6 conferences, and between those 60 some schools, they will get to spread the 130 million dollars given out to the 10 schools between the power schools. The rest of the bowls, for the lesser conferences and the bottom half of the Big 6 barely get half of that put together to split between the other 60 schools that partake in the lesser bowls.

We will always remember what the few Heisman winners and the stars of the game, because of their athletic ability. We will also remember the great 1 on 1 games, Texas v. USC, and so on. The biggest loser is the players that worked so hard to get to the BCS championship, and the schools that go unnoticed in the other no-name conferences. One day we will crown a champion and it will be NCAA sanctioned and the number of championships will start to be counted, like we count Super Bowl championships. With the growth of football in America, the playoff will be something like we have never seen before. Imagine March Madness for College football then times the hype by 10 and add the pull for the networks. It is getting closer to that day and the more pressure we put on those old white guys in control the more chance we will have of knowing who really is the best college team in the Nation.

It was sloppy both inside and outside of the Hodge Center on Sunday Afternoon as the Bucs took on the USC Up-State Spartans. As the days temperature went up so did the pressure on the Bucs who were coming off of an upset of Dayton. With less than 6 seconds on the clock USCU forward Chalmers Rogers laid back in his only two points of the night to knock off the Bucs in a huge A-Sun upset. The Spartans came away with a 60-59 win and got off to a good start in conference play. Full Story

Memphis heads to Louis to face old rival Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- What used to be a modest football rivalry between two schools fiercely competing for basketball championships in Conference USA is no longer. Louisville bolted C-USA five years ago for a Bowl Championship Series conference, leaving the Tigers to fend for themselves in a league weakened not only by Louisville's exit but the departures of Cincinnati and South Florida as well. Today at 1 p.m. CDT, Memphis (1-4) and Louisville (2-2) play for a second time since the Cardinals flew the C-USA nest. And if history is any indicator, the Tigers will be in for a difficult afternoon at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium, Louisville's 56,000-seat on-campus facility.

UT needs win against Georgia

There’s only so much a team like Tennessee can do to prepare for a player of the caliber of Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green. There’s even more that they can’t. “I can’t make them older and I can’t make them taller and I can’t make them faster,” coach Derek Dooley said.

Green, at 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds, is a tough matchup no matter the height and size of the opposing cornerbacks who have the misfortune of guarding him one on one. UT, though, doesn’t even have a cornerback on the two-deep that clears 6-1 on the measuring stick. Junior Art Evans is Tennessee’s closest thing to a tall cornerback. He’ll still give up a few inches to Green today at Georgia

The Saturday Night Take: Boise St. Poor Showing by SEC, and Jacksonville St. Shocks the World

By:Josh Harwood

9/4/2010

ModelCitySports.com

The Intro: The SEC looked the most rustful of all of the conferences. Ole Miss' will rival Kansas for biggest upset of the year! That's not a good thing! Michigan looked like they are on their way! UT, Georgia, Texas, TCU, and Oregon took care of business and live to fight another day. Though the shocking Upsets should be the headline of the day, I'll tell you why the Boise St. game with Virginia Tech will shape the College football landscape for the next 4-5 years. Plus the Terrible Coaching job that Les Miles has done over the past few years has gone unnoticed long enough, so i'll tell you why LSU should have never hired the former 'Cowboy'.Finally my Alma Mater, Chattanooga about toppled Appy State in the first game of the year for Chattanooga and Appy St. So now that you know the topics lets get going!

The SEC is not the usual SEC! Most Schools, including LSU, had games with lesser opponents. However, Ole Miss depends on a QB that wasn’t their QB 2 weeks ago to bring them back and try and win over JACKSONVILLE ST, and THEY GET BEAT! Auburn struggles for a while and Florida forgot to practice the snap. LSU did everything in their power to let UNC almost win. I have more on Les Miles later. But the SEC looked like this in Relative Performance to the Preseason Rankings

2. TCU does not have any hope for a National Championship

- Does that Statement just not sit with you right?? A team that competes against competition that some of the BCS conferences are fighting over has not a single legitimate shot at winning a National Championship. The reason is because they have fallen to 2nd Place in the non-BCS school Rankings which encompasses UTAH, BYU, TCU, and Boise St. The reason they are in 2nd, is because they lost to Boise Sts. Last Year! That is unfair and how thhe BCS will operate until one of them cracks and breaks into the system.

3. Boise State's game Monday Night holds the future for every team outside of the 6 BCS conferences in its hands in that one game. Like the Unspoken Non-BCS rankings, where Boise leads, the fight to get a non-BCS team a shot at the Ring is all or not on Monday. As pressure filled as this sounds – this is the truth of the matter for atleast the next 4 years. If Boise gets beaten, by a great Virginia tech team, they will blow the hopes of the non-BCS schools of getting past the regular BCS games and into the National Championship game. However, if Boise State wins, and goes on to win out the rest of the year it would almost be impossible to keep the Broncos out of the National Championship game. If Boise wins they may be the straw that brings about a Playoff system, if the get blown out the Non-BCS schools will have to ride out a decade of just hoping to get to the Fiesta or Sugar. Even if the make a good game it will change things, for everyone to know that anyone can beat the Top SEC team would be huge for the Playoff Advocates. Sorry for the pressure, but it’s the truth.

4.  Michigan and Notre Dame will be considered all the way back before they are by everyone on ESPN all next week. Lou Holtz, most likely, will start the cat calls by saying Notre Dame is BACKSH!! After beating Purdue, a team most thought was between a 4th-8th team in the Big 10, the Notre Dame faithful will have a full bandwagon as will Michigan. Michigan’s win is a bit more impressive. With a QB duo out of necessity more than a talent, Tate Forcier was put to backup after his summer of embarrassment and under achievement,. Robinson came in and did more than the job as he led the Wolverines to a much needed beating of a tough Huskies squad that beat them last year. All in all, next week is the true litmus test for the two teams, each other. I see a much closer game than I expected just two weeks ago. However, look for Rich Rod to get one on Brian Kelly before Notre Dame’s return to prominence next year. By the end of the year though both teams will be in the same ball park with 8-9 wins looking to try and high jack a BCS bowl.

5. Finally we will look at the Conundrums of the Week:

The Big 12 – Up is Down and Down in Up in the Wide-Open usually high powered league. Kansas pulls an Ole Miss, and Oklahoma tried but won on accident. Baylor and Oklahoma St. looked like World beaters against fair competition. Texas looked average for Texas but Oklahoma or Kansas would love to have looked like that. I think it has been over 10 years since Kansas didn’t have an explosive offense and to score only 3 points is crazy and unacceptable. I honestly think this conference is up for grabs in its last year as we know it. Baylor, OSU, or Kansas St. could easily shock the Big 12 to get to the championship if the teams that are normally at top keep this up.

Les Miles(Next Week:Houston Nutt) – How did this guy get the LSU job again??? He seriously should have topped out at Oklahoma State. He could win, yet he still lost twice, a national championships with Saban’s top 10 recruiting classes left for him. However, he has had 5 straight top 10 recruiting classes and acts as if he is just struggling to find talent. His QB position is the same every year, his defense is good for moments, and the Offense is as predictable as the which direction the sun sets. Just look at how UNC did a little switch, putting more pressure on the QB, at halftime and then bam a shut out and nearly pulled off what people thought impossible with all of the people they had out. Miles may be a great guy, but he CAN NOT coach. He has arguably the most talented player in the nation at corner, Patterson, and a 5 star recruit at every position but he can’t do it. Other teams will have to do it for him for the Tigers to win another under him, by that I mean Saban or Meyer will first have to stumble big time. They will have to be caught between QBs, and other teams will have to be intimidated by their talent, which they are not. LSU’s stadium has only so much mystique, and Saban used it to perfection going on that 30 game undefeated streak.

-But honestly Miles has an average recruiting class of 4.3 topping out at 2nd twice (both times to Alabama-Saban)

-His Record ….

Ole Miss 3-3

-So I repeat Myself, Why did LSU hire this guy? Mark my words they will never win the NCAA again, under Miles. They will NEVER go undefeated….But they will continue to get top 10 recruiting classes…..

Bold Predictions ‘til Next Week:

-Michigan over Notre Dame 28-23

-Boise St. over Virginia Tech 21-18(doesn’t Boise remind you of the ’00 Virginia Tech?)

-Alabama over Penn St. 30 – 17

-Mississippi St. Over Auburn 31 – 26

-South Florida over Florida 27 – 19

-Ohio St. over Miami (ina Pryor – Harris duel for the ages)

at least I hope so, 40 – 35

-Oregon over UT 42 – 21

-Florida St. over Oklahoma 30 – 27

-South Carolina over Georgia 26 -21

Why are the Oregon teams the only ones that will step up and play Boise St. or TCU?
