Turkey Bowl 2011: A Huge Success All Photos by Josh Harwood for ModelCitySPorts.com 11/26/2011 The Turkey Bowl is looking to become a V.O. Dobbins Tradition once again. Friday afternoon around 120 people filled the atrea for some good old fashioned Flag football. The Young kids went first with Fred Smith and JaMichael Mills going head up as coaches. Later on the older individuals took part as some local legends looked on. Kairi Thompson, Devaun Swafford, and Malik Foreman were just a few of the kids who took part in game 2. Antuan Smith, Trippy Deal, and Fred Smith were just a few of the individuals to make the event possible. But the event had alot of purpose and that purpose was to make help kids not go without this holiday season. The event went on without a hitch and hopefully we will be back next year and each year after that. Photos from the Event Results from the Fund-Raising for the Kids:

Logos of All Kinds......Picture by Josh Harwood for ModelCitySports.com BY: Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 12/21/2010 So much talk has been about Greeneville being the best, not just state champs, but also being one of, if not the, greatest teams from east Tennessee. While I think most of this talk is people being prisoners of the moment, it did stir up some conversation about greatness and that is always fun to look at. With all of this in mind, we decided to look at the past decade, the ‘00s- the ‘double ought’s, and decide what teams are the greatest of the past 10 years. In NFL the talk is always about the ‘85 Bears, ’08 Pats, or ’72 Dolphins. Major Leagues, with a tad more history, have the ‘89 A’s, ‘98 Yankees, and almost every other one of the 26 Yankee Championships. So MCS decided to sit down at the round table and argue until we came out with the best teams of local prep football. By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports 12/11/2010 Teddy Gaines grew up in the Kingsport system, became a Dobyns-Bennett great and moved on to UT, the NFL, and now the coaching profession. Teddy was one of the most electrifying players during the mid-90s at Dobyns-Bennett - where he played both ways, WR and Cornerback. During his days at UT, he started from his freshman year, 1998, when UT won a National Championship, until he graduated and would be drafted by the San Francisco 49ers with the 256th pick of the 2002 draft. His career didn’t pan out the way he had hoped but he has moved on to coaching from UT-Chattanooga to Brevard College, where he coaches under former ETSU coach Paul Hamilton. Teddy took a break from his time down in North Carolina to talk with ModelCitySports and we got the chance to catch up with one of Kingsport’s legends. Bailey Scores Game Winning TD....Pictures Taken and Edited by Josh Harwood fro ModelCitySports.com By Josh Harwood Stats By Bill Harwood ModelCitySports 11/17/12 With classification breaking up some old school rivalries, it’s nice to see such heat between two of the best teams in the area, Elizabethton and Sullivan North. The two teams are so close in scheme and in personnel the two games the teams put on this year are separated by less than a touchdown, combined. The Raiders once again out-gained the Cyclones in yardage; but the penalties and ejection of Jacob Jasper, North’s third leading rusher, turned out to be the difference from North or Elizabethton heading into the semi-finals. With the Raiders’ backs against the wall Cory Rowe nearly single-handedly led Sullivan North to a comeback win, only to fall short in overtime 41-38. Continue with Recap and STory with Stats and More
Note from Reporter: The 2013 Senior Class has done things no other class has done at North in 32 years. Cory Rowe, Kairi Thompson, and Chase Arnold are some of the names that put up the numbers and changed the culture. However, it’s been an over haul that started from the top down and even some of the kids from the last two years that showed these kids the way to be professional and well behaved young men. Pictures and Artile By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 11/15/12 Rarely does Dobyns-Bennett go into a game as the under-dog. It’s been 8 years since the Tribe has been to the quarterfinals and 2004 was the culmination of 2 straight quarterfinal losses to Oak Ridge. In those 8 years the only true time the Indians were definitive under dogs was in 2009, when a 5-5 Tribe got there clocks cleaned by the state champs, Maryville. After 8 years of under-performing, Graham Clark has the Tribe back to fighting for a state championship like the teams from 1998 to 2003. While most of the state is picking against the Indians, the two teams are much closer than it looks on paper and neither team has played a team as talented as they will come Friday. By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 11/14/12 After falling to Elizabethton on last minute comeback, the Sullivan North squad looked as if they had lost the state championship. The hurt spread from the coaches to the players and even to the fans. Sullivan North had two choices; let the season get away from them or get up off the ground and fight and maybe, just maybe they would meet the Cyclones again. The seniors that have changed the culture in Bloomingdale chose the later and now the Raiders get what the wanted more the anything, a chance at redemption over their biggest rival. By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 11/10/12 “We have had this monkey hanging on for what feels like forever,” said a jubilant Tribe coach Graham Clark. “It was by no means pretty, but we are finally going to get to see what the DB Option can do against Maryville.” The Sevier County Smokey Bears came to Kingsport for a 2nd round match-up in consecutive years after losing to the Indians in the regular season. Just as last year when the two teams collided on 11-11-11 in the 2nd round, the Bears were once again the roadblock to great things for Dobyns Bennett. Graham Clark has dominated the match-up with Steve Brewer, but when it came down to the playoffs Brewer had the edge at 2-0. How sweet would it be for Coach Clark to get his 200th win against what has been a thorn in his side come playoff time when the two have met? Full Story with Stats and More Round 2 Preview: Sullivan North Host West Greene
By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 11/8/12 Sullivan North and West Greene have very little history with one another. North has become one of the top tier teams in 3A, while West Greene won their first playoff game in its history a week ago. They sometimes have scrimmaged but when it counts the two teams have only met twice, with North winning both. The last time the two teams met was 2009 in the first round of the playoffs and North won easily 45-14. On paper it looks to be a repeat of what happened three years ago. West Greene may be the worst 2nd round team in 3A, after starting the year 2-5, the Buffaloes went on to take 3 straight and an upset of Cumberland Gap in the first round to finally get over .500 at 6-5. Even with 6 wins the Buffaloes still have been outscored 257 to 214 over the year. The Raiders are coming off a shut out of Three Rivers rival Unicoi County 34-0, the Buffaloes may be in over their heads, but anything can happen on one night in the playoffs. By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 11/8/12 For the 4th time in less than 14 months the Smoky Bears and Indians face off, also a repeat of last year’s 2nd round Win by Sevier County. The Tribe has a 22-6 career advantage over the Smokey Bears, but the Bears are 2-0 in the playoffs since 1980 against the Indians. Both teams have the exact same record as they did going into the 2nd round last year. It’s almost scary how similar the Bears are to the same team that upset the Tribe this same week last year. Last year Cullen Lavoi threw for 31 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions, while Luke Manning has thrown 26 touchdowns and just 5 interceptions this year. Both QBs are running threats that rushed for more than 4 touchdowns and over 250 yards. The Smokey Bears averaged 38.7 points a game to just 38.6 this year, conversely they gave up 19.1 points a game to 19.3 this year. Recap/Pics By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 10/19/12 When a game is looming ahead that may be historic in what it could be, the game right before that event is described as a trap game. Volunteer (2-4, 3-6) is not the cellar dweller they have been the last few years and their record is a terrible indication by the gains that Head Coach Scott Rider has made in Hawkins County. Dobyns Bennett (6-0, 9-0)played a well focused game for the first 5 possessions, scoring on every drive, but after that the urgency left the stadium. They had year lows in yards, first downs, and the lowest point total since the first game of the year against Farrgut. (42) However, its hard to say a 43-0 win is a huge let down, but this 2012 Tribe has set the bar so high. From TSSAA Outlooks By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 10/17/2012 All year long the talk has been about what is going to happen in classfication next year. Was the DB-South rivalry over? Some local Schools would love for this to be the final week if the playoffs were to stay like this. Alcoa is back in Quad 2, so the 3A - Quad 1 comes down to Elizabethton vs. Sullivan North. Sullivan South has finally made their first appearance in the bracketing as their 4th win slides them in as the final 5A team, not qualified by being 1 or 2 in their conference. However, the 6A is flipping around and Science Hill is the number 1 seed for the week as Jefferson County falls to 8th after being at 5th. Top Picture and Article By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 9/26/2012 With Week 6 over and half of the season now passed it is an easy pausing point to find out who has done the job to set themselves up for the playoffs and the one’s that simply haven’t. Some of the surprises on the year include South’s slide, Key Injuries, and Daniel Boone’s ascension. No one expected South to lose back to back games to Betsy and Tennessee High, while no one expected Daniel Boone to be in position to be the top 5A team out of the Big Eight and maybe coast to a 8-2 record or even 9-1 if Jeremy Jenkins can upset his buddy Stacey Carter. Picture and Article By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 9/25/2012 John Sevier has not had a year to remember as of today. With the talented quintet of Ty Cornett, Michael Miller, Isaiah Jayne, Logan Atwell, and Tyler Arnold big things were hyped up for the Warriors coming into 2012. Standing at 2-4, the Warriors could erase the entirety of let downs with back to back wins over Church Hill then Robinson. Beating Robinson in the City Championship can erase a season of zero wins, but on Tuesday evening the Warriors had a hungry bunch in the Church Hill Panthers to deal with, and they had already topped the 5-1 Redskins. The teams battled down to the wire as Church Hill jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but a botched 2 point conversion was all Sevier needed as they came back for the 7-6 win. Full Story w/ Stats and Pictures

The past two weeks have been an unwelcome site as the Rebels have shot themselves in the foot in two straight games. Against Elizabethton (4-2), South moved the ball between the 20’s with ease, while stalling out in the red zone. Two Interceptions and 2 failed 4th Downs in the first half gave Betsy the early lead and they held on stopping the Rebels’ rally in the 4th quarter. Full Story w/ Full Stats and Photos by VSP

Are they really this good? They can’t do what they did last year? The list goes on and on and Sullivan North just keeps winning with the same formula no matter ho banged up they may be at the moment. With the core of seniors that the Raiders have it will be hard to have a void of leadership and thus there will be a void of let downs against lesser opponents and that’s what took place in Thunder Valley on Friday night. The Playoffs at First Glance – Class 5A –From Morristown and their Super Talented duo to the Undefeated duo of Powell and Henry County
PIctures by Zane Smith By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 10/31/11 Tennessee High seemed to do the minimum amount required to get into the playoffs. The past two years it seemed that 5-5 had become the watermark for teams moving into the TSSAA final 32. Lenoir City, Anderson County, Station Camp, AND Cocke County had to pull off some miracles to get into the playoffs and leave Cleveland and Tennessee High 2 of the teams left out of the playoffs.5A had 15 teams with 5 wins vying for 10 playoff spots that would go all the way to 3rd to 10th tie-breakers in the TSSAA formats to find out which teams would be in and which ones would be staying home. Unfair, of course, but this is the world the TSSAA has created and we are just living in it. Full Predictions....and Full Recap of Class 5A

The Official Quad 1 Playoff Brackets - Out Now!!!
ModelCitySports.com 10/28/2011 Alot of new things have happened with the playoffs this year. Conference record has taken up new importance, and a team like Coffee County is in the playoffs with a 3-7 record. To pick on Betsy for a 2nd, they have 2 wins outside the TSSAA with wins over teams from North Carolina, which should be considered less than the wins INSIDE of Tennessee. Jefferson County and their win over South Doyle gets them with a rematch in Kingsport, and South Greene fail from a 3 seed earlier to an 8th seed and a match-up against Sullivan North. Knox West stayed in Quad 1 which kept South from getting a 2 seed, because of 5A action in NAshville/Memphis moving everything a step west....For Full Brackets and Records......You are Free to Print the Brackets out for your own Use on Predictions... Sullivan South Gets their Key to the Playoffs as Central Struggles, 49-7
Pictures by Todd Caulkins By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 10/28/2011 Sullivan South started the year 0-2 and looked as if they had no defense, giving up around 55 points per game during the first two contests. They would go on a torrid run winning 5 of the next 6 and it looked like the Rebels would walk into the playoffs 7-3 and most likely the 3 seed. They started to play with fire a bit, never settling down on an offense that is consistent and got hit in the mouth by Daniel Boone and actually needed the win against Central to lock up a playoff berth. David Crockett came back and got their one win with a huge kickoff that may have been the most exciting moment ever for two 0-8 teams. True Grit: Foreman leads Tribe Roaring back to 42-12 Win By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 9/17/2011 Sometimes you get lost in the glitz of blowing out a team by 40 points, but you never find out who you are unless someones pushes you to your limit.Boone came out and hit the Tribe in the mouth closing the lead to 14-6 going into the half and things were even worse without starting QB, Chris Cook. Foreman, who was hurt himself, took to QB beautifully and lead the Tribe to 4 straight scores, eventually leaving the Gray team down 42-12.

Rebel Charge: South’s Moore leads Charge Topping Vikings 33-30 in OT By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 9/17/2011 With the loss of Heath Haden to graduation and Alex Rogers to injury, Tennessee High (1-1, 2-3) thought it could get back to dominating the Rebels like it used to. Like it has so many times in the past, the Rebels had just enough defense and plentyof depth of offense to keep thVikings off balnce allowing for a 4th quarter comeback to send the game to overtime. South (1-1, 2-2) matched the Vikings fast-paced offense with Charlie Moore, Mitchell Crowe, and Jake Weaver as they came storming back to tie the Vikings at 27 all. South would need just one overtime as Weaver would put the Rebels on his back to win in the first overtime, 33-30. Central looked to open their new turf with a win especially since Volunteer was realing without stud running back Devin Rogers who was sidelined for the year with a broken arm. While Central still struggled with their new offense, Volunteer did just enough behind Jordan Lawson's legs and Houston Harris' arm to grab the win. Most of the 200 plus yards would come on two drives as Central was held to just 115 yards on the evening. Central falls to 0-4 in conference while Volunter moves out of last place at 1-4.

See you in Miami(Homestead): The Chase is Set to Roar Into Chicago - MCS breaks it down to the Drivers to See Who is the Favorite Pictures by Richard Newton Article by:Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 9/15/2011 The Chase is upon us and the most exciting pre-chase race took place over the past 5-6 weeks. Since the inception of the chase, the problem had always been the mid-summer races leading up to the chase with most drivers having already clearly separated themselves. This year with a wreck on Lap 8 of Richmond it looked like Hamlin and Dale Jr. were going to be looking on the outside in as they were both in the 40s at one point. Jr. made a run that recalled the runs of his father as he pushed people out of his way and made it into the chase with a car that was no where near a top 20 car. Hamlin did they same with a bit of a better car, especially aerodynamically. Break Down of the Odds for Each Driver.... Former Indian McInturff Named AAC Defensive Player of the Week

Why has sports taken such an intense and pervasive turn into the lives and minds of the athletes we love? To find out where we have been dumped we need to stop for a second and look at what led us to here. You hear the statement all of the time, “It’s more than just a game” or something similar to it. It has always meant to me that you can learn from the game, or that you can take the lessons learned in the struggle to succeed and transfer them as lessons for overcoming obstacles in life. It has never meant to me what goes on outside of the game it by far more important than the game itself. Yet, as the NBA Finals come to a close it seems a pattern set in motion in the early 90’s has brought us to a point to where the game doesn’t matter near as much as what happens off the field and/or court. It was thought that since a Rockies scout was at most of Science Hill's games he would fall no lower than number 20 where the Colorado organization stood. However, as it came more and more apparent that Norris is interested in honoring his commitment to Clemson he faded for at least one day. First Round Choices and Recap... As for most of us its just a dream, for Dale Earnhardt Jr. it seems to be his stock car career at the moment. For the second time this year the black 29, the car his father used to drive, seems to be haunting Dale Jr. as he passed him on the final lap to snatch the victory away. This time it wasn’t a better car that Kevin Harvick was driving, no this time Junior just ran out of gas, as did many other s on the final few laps of the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte. By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 5/16/2011 As the regular season wrapped up with conference tournaments, my perception of the teams in the area became less clear. I was sure that Dobyns-Bennett’s hitting could make up for the lack of a true no.1 starter. I was sure that Unicoi County had peaked in the middle of the year, trying to get back into the race for the crown of 3 Rivers and would bow out early in the District tournament. I was sure that Science Hill would go as far as Daniel Norris could take them. However, I am still sure that the cream rose to the top and the Cinderella’s of the regular season fell by the wayside. Pictures by Josh Harwood for ModelCitySports.com By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 5/8/2011 Following this edition of the Sullivan North Raiders all year you begin to expect things, for one, crazy comebacks no matter the size of the mountain. As the innings ticked away, Johnson County(15-17) kept answering each flurry the Raiders (16-13) would put together with a blast of their own. Down 10-6 in their last at-bat it looked for a second as if North was going to make one last charge as Cory Rowe escaped a mistake on the Longhorns part in a run down situation. Sammy Hampton turned out to be the water to the Raiders fire and broke the spirit of the Raiders in the 7th. The two previous matches have been two of the most intense battles with each coming down to the last at-bat in both contests. I am not talking about the girl’s games or the boy’s game, but the game on the court and the game in the stands. DB won the game with a 2nd quarter run that pushed the lead in the double digits and they may have won the crowd competition with a well thought out “sketch” during halftime that had 3 fans tossed for their activity with the halftime show. Instead of standing at a respectable 17-6, the Indians went into Tuesday night standing at 15-8 and struggling. Highway Robbery in Cherokee, DB stunned 62-60
Picture taken and edited by Josh harwood for use with ModelCitySports.com only By Josh Harwood ModelCitySports.com 1/15/11 During a visit to Cherokee last year, Dobyns-Bennett(13-6) was left feeling helpless as the Chiefs beat the Indians from the free throw line on their way to a 53-51 steal. If that was a common everyday theft, today’s game was the Berney Madoff of thefts the Indians had to endure. The Indians let a 10 point lead slowly fade away in a controversial 4th quarter, that saw the zebras put their imprint on the game with a technical foul that would be the two-point difference, as the Chiefs(14-4) stole another one - 62-60. The Indians could never get their shot rolling from 13 feet out and thus the Viking zone got smaller and smaller, making it impossible for the Indians to get to the basket. Tuesday night was a completely different game as Devaun Swafford and Cory Combs stretched the defense and hit their shots to open up the zone and penetrate – making for a zone that got larger until it disappeared all together. Swafford turned things around from a mediocre shooting performance at Volunteer and lifted the Indians to a 72-36 win. Full Story

From brightening up my days playing volleyball, hanging at his many number of places of rest, or just sitting and talking in a parked car – Allun was one of a kind and will be missed by many. Instead of taking time out and recapping what everyone already knows, we are going to take a look at what the tournaments set up for the upcoming conference slate. During much of the first half, the Chiefs’ James Scales went one on one with Juwan Johnson in a game that brought out the best in each during the first 16 minutes. The two combined for 41 points or almost 40% of all of the scoring at Buck Van Huss on Tuesday night. It would turn out that Scales had plenty of scoring help during the final 8 minutes while the Indians(3-1, 7-3) would only muster 8 points in the 4th quarter and fall by 3, 56-53, to the old rival.
